HW
*Introduction*

    The Radio Frequency Group (RF) of the Accelerator and Beams
    Department (AB) is responsible for all the RF systems that are used
    to accelerate the particle beams in the various accelerators of the
    CERN complex. The Synchrotrons RF Section (SR) inside the RF Group
    is responsible for design, construction and operation of RF cavities
    and power amplifiers of these systems.

    Substantial programs for consolidation and eventual upgrade of the
    200MHz and 800MHz RF power systems of the Super Proton Synchrotron
    (SPS) have been approved. An additional 200MHz RF system (ACN) is
    being prepared for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

*Functions*

    You will be part of a small team responsible for the high power RF
    systems of all present and future CERN accelerators. In particular,
    you will:

        * Participate in the operation, maintenance and improvement of
          the installed high power RF systems and cavities. This
          activity includes your participation in a first-line support
          of the accelerator operation and will be an important part of
          your on-the-job training;
        * Contribute to design work on new high power RF systems based
          on state of the art technology, using specialised simulation
          and computing applications and liaise with other CERN teams
          and services;
        * Contribute to the full cycle of design, manufacturing and
          operation for power amplifiers and power couplers for the LHC
          200MHz RF system (ACN);
        * Participate in the upgrade of the 800MHz RF system of the
          Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), involving use of new RF power
          devices;
        * In close interaction with other specialist teams in the RF
          group, you will also participate in the specification of low
          power RF and controls equipment and in testing of complete
          systems in the accelerators;
        * Document and present your work as appropriate;

    Special attention to safety issues, from system design
    considerations through to installation and operating procedures will
    be an essential element in all of this work.

*Qualification required*

    Technical engineer diploma or equivalent in electrical engineering

*Experience and knowledge*

        * Good knowledge in electrical circuitry and some relevant
          experience in this domain.
        * Some knowledge and experience in high voltage techniques with
          some knowledge of or a keen interest in RF technology would be
          distinct advantages.
        * Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of
          a pluri-disciplinary team
        * Strong sense of responsibility and initiative.
        * Good knowledge of either French or English, with basic
          knowledge of the other language or an undertaking to acquire
          it rapidly.

SW
*Introduction*

    The Radio Frequency Group (RF) is responsible for all the RF systems
    that are used to accelerate the particle beams in the various
    accelerators of the CERN complex. Current major projects are the RF
    systems for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), presently in
    commissioning and a new injection Linear Accelerator (LINAC4) now in
    construction.

    The Cavity Servos and Controls Interface Section (CS) of the RF
    Group designs, maintains and operates the slow and fast digital
    control sytems needed for the RF systems. The activities include
    hardware design with programmable logic, digital signal processing,
    process control with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs),
    real-time control using VMEbus front-end computers, and development
    of application software running on operator consoles.

*Functions*

    As a software specialist in the CS Section you will be part of a
    small multicultural team responsible for developing controls
    software for the RF systems of the Large Hadron Collider, LINAC4 and
    and other accelerators in the CERN complex. In particular, you will:

        * Actively contribute to the analysis and design of the control
          software required to operate the newly-developed RF systems of
          the LHC.
        * Design and develop:
              o Real-time control software running on VME systems for
                the digital beam control and feedback systems;
              o Supervision software for the PLCs controlling the RF
                high-power systems;
              o Graphical application software for operation;
              o Diagnostic software for surveillance and
                post-operational checks of the RF equipment.
        * Collaborate with the Controls and Operations teams for the
          integration of the RF equipment into the accelerator control
          system.
        * Contribute to the first-line support provided by the group for
          the operation of the accelerators.
        * Document and present your work as appropriate.

*Qualification required*

    Technical engineer diploma or equivalent in computer science.

*Experience and knowledge*

        * Up to five years’ experience in software development (Unix, C,
          C++, Java) and good knowledge of software development methods
          and related tools.
        * Some experience or knowledge in one or several of the
          following domains would be an advantage:
              o Low-level programming on LynxOS and/or Linux (Drivers,
                I/O libraries);
              o Digital electronics and/or control and feedback systems;
              o PLC systems;
              o Graphical programming environments such as LabView.
        * Good communication skills and ability to work effectively in
          multidisciplinary project teams.
        * Good knowledge of either French or English with basic
          knowledge of the other language, or an undertaking to acquire
          it rapidly.
