Anecdotal evidence suggests that LED light bulbs may have an adverse effect
on the life of small animals. A recent post by René van Gemert, CEO at
Salescraft, S.L., on the LinkedIn discussion group "Innovations in Light"
recounts the tale of a customer who started using LED bulbs at his rabbit
farm. The area where the rabbits were kept consisted of three rows of cages
that originally had linear fluorescent light above each row. When the
customer retrofitted one of the lighting rows with LED tubes, he found that
over a three-month period, every 20 days 40% of the female rabbits
miscarried. When he swapped the lighting to a different row, the same thing
occurred. Rabbits under fluorescent lighting had normal offspring.
Contributors to the group also suggest that chickens may be affected. Causes
for the problem proposed by the group include the ripple effect of LEDs and
their reduced spectrum of light, particularly UV, from LEDs. It seems that
further study will be needed to determine the cause and fix for the problem.
