An example is that SMSC’s acquisition by Microchip Technology for $939M can
potentially result in Microchip expanding beyond the microcontroller
business. It is, however, critical to gain high value leverage from the
acquired company or else the high purchase value will not provide good
financial returns (SMSC’s purchase price is 2.3X its revenues).
Intel is clearly indicating an expansion of its addressed markets with its
recent acquisitions of interface IP technologies. The prices Intel paid for
its acquisitions are reasonable.
AMD’s acquisition of SeaMicro is an unusual move for a semiconductor vendor
(ie, gaining access to system design expertise). With appropriate
implementation approaches, there is upside potential for AMD from the
SeaMicro acquisition, although it is important for AMD to not be viewed as
a competitor to its customers.
Trident Microsystems has been sold in pieces to Entropic Communications,
Sigma Design, and RDA Technologies. If the company had remained as an
ongoing business entity, all of its value would have dissipated. The steps
taken and completed provided good value to the stakeholders compared to
other options.
